What Have We Learned Thus Far?

What have we learned from our presence in the Middle East so far?  For starters, they are a resilient people.  Their culture, more importantly their religion, has been followed for over 1,300 years, practicing from the Qur'an.  97% of those in Libya are Muslim.  Recently with the focus on Libya one must ask them self, is our military presence really going to abolish a standard of life and mind set that millions hold across the land?

Military relief in form of care, supplies and important medical attention is beneficial, however, is calling for U.S. arms to drastic?  Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told a Senate panel Wednesday that "there may well be a role for military assets to get equipment and supplies into areas that have a need for them" and in areas where the United States is welcome. But she noted the Arab League statement issued Wednesday that rejected "any foreign interference within Libya on behalf of the opposition, even though they have called for Gadhafi to leave." "The tough issues about how and whether there would be any intervention to assist those who are opposing Libya is very controversial within Libya and within the Arab community," Clinton told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "So we are working closely with our partners and allies to try to see what we can do and we are engaged in very active consideration of all the different options that are available."  We learned from our previous endeavors into the land that these are a people whose way of life has transcended our culture, that has been practiced nearly a thousand of years before Christianity and has been deeply ingrained into the minds of its followers.  In Libya right now you have Col. Moammar Gadhafi ruling over a country divided.  Those protesting, fleeing from his grasp, a social massacre; figuratively and literally at times.  Then you have those who say they truly back their commander, but one has to think that fear must play a hand.  Contrary to what supporters may claim, Gadhafi, is under war crime investigation.  This still doesn't account for our presence.  Still the fact remains, a country established under such substantial regard to faith and nearly no social independence stands a very tough chance of growing over night, let alone even years.

Since the Bush administration, spilling over into Obama's we have had military presence all over the region, most notably Afghanistan and Iraq.  With successful drone attacks in those regions, stated by President Obama, things are said to be getting better. I ask what was so successful? It has been since the absence of the Bush administration that we have learned there were no Weapons Of Mass Destruction. WMD's... DUN DUN DUNNNNN.  That is why were were suppose to be there, right?  Do not get me wrong any and all threats made and uncovered should be elaborated on and hopefully rectified accordingly.  The 9/11 attacks were horrific and unspeakably malicious. So if we discovered there were no weapons, haven't caught Bin Laden and still cant seem to find him why are we still there?  Yes, drones have destroyed terrorist bunkers, and eliminated high status allies to Bin Laden.  However, Al Qaeda represents a small mentality of the Middle East society.

I mentioned earlier these are a people who remained unchanged for centuries.  A culture who now seems more divided then ever.  With revolution seeming to be the popular move why not Libya?  Why not Afghanistan and Iraq? The answer is why not? We all deserve our freedom, independence, all the amendments we attribute to our society.  So far our military presence in the form of violence seems to have unfounded benefits. There should be no question that our help is needed more than ever.  If their is a reason to have our presence it is now.  When these societies are calling for change and need our help, this is when we should carry out action when we know we can promise a difference other eliminating a few less insignificant threats.  You change a world in the right direction the bad is weeded out. The Bush administration set out to find an enemy they knew nothing about, to change a society they did not understand.  What we have here now is a country with all their cards on the table.  We see them for who and what they are, more importantly what they want. Lets help them get it.
