This is my first installment of ARTIST SPOTLIGHT. Every day I'll be highlighting bands and artists I like, as well as those I feel need to be heard. With out further ado my first spotlight shines on one of my all time favorite and most influential bands, currently touring over seas and across North America, Deftones
For starters I must express how influential and important these guys have been in my music and life in general. I've grown up with them through high school and later in college. Although 'Adrenaline' was their first album 'Around the Fur' is what really raped my ears. Totally taking advantage of a simple young teen, just learning how to play the guitar, virtually power chord driven, skater kid. Forcing me to give in to the experience and keeping it to myself because I didn't want anyone finding out my dirty little secret. Never have I heard such heavy, yet still beautifully melodic tunes turned out by some of the raddest west coast rockers the metal scene, has, well... seen. With six full length albums, two going platinum in the states(Adrenaline and White Pony), they prove to be a lasting presence on this bitch of a music industry. Which can only explain why their latest endeavor, 'Diamond Eyes', just shows how much the band has matured and truly come into their own. From their earlier albums, notably, 'White Pony', a track "Back to School," which lead singer Chino Moreno shows of some hip-hop influenced vocal chops by flowing lyrically. Lyrics, any high school kid could relate to. Their music transcends age and could be appreciated by anyone. This trend seems to not be fleeting. With their title track opening with a jarring leading riff, seduced by Chino's silky brutal vocals, 'Diamond Eyes', their latest album proves to be what the Deftones set out to be. The hardest, melodic, front runners on the scene.
