Age Old Debate: Tattoos In The Work Place

Tattoos in the work place has, for many years, been under plenty scrutiny. However, you can't negate the fact they exist on millions of peoples bodies.  The question is then, does a tattoo decrease the value and credibility of an employee? No matter how knoweledgeable  and versed they are?  According to the most recent Harris Poll, conducted in the summer of 2003, approximately 15% of Americans (or about 40 million people) have at least one tattoo.  Surely, the majority of these 40 million people can hold down and job, and perhaps many of them in upper echelon positions.

Still, the problem lies in many uber conservative vampires vying for most closed minded employer award.  Many private companies still see tattoos as a negative aspect to a perspective applicant.  While I do agree that dress code and appearance, in terms of cleanliness, are important and specific to different jobs.  I believe, art, that I decided to portray on my body holds no bearing on how I perform at work.  Not trying "split hairs" here, but honestly doesn't this sound awfully like prejudice in the work place?

The fact is tattoos are more popular then ever.  With the advent of reality TV portraying the growing scene and the professional artistry reaching heights unseen, tattoos will be a part of societies flesh.  Mines as well. Of course. CNN recently filmed a short clip detailing this scenario.  Shows both pro and opposing sides to the debate. Check it:
